Frequently Asked Questions

Our staff would like to take this opportunity to thank you for choosing Sunair Aviation. Our distinguished flight school has been training pilots for the past 36 years with an unblemished safety record. Our goal is to deliver the most efficient and professional flight training while maintaining a family atmosphere. With our expertly maintained aircraft and dedicated flight staff, Sunair has the right tools to help you reach your aviation goals, however lofty they might be.

Many of our students have graduated from Sunair's flight training programs and moved on to successful careers with regional airlines, charter airlines, corporations, cargo companies, the Federal Aviation Administration and more, and some have become FAA Certified Flight Instructors.

Who will be my instructor?

An FAA Certified Flight Instructor will be assigned to you based on your schedule and goals. To maximize your learning experience, we endeavor to give you the same instructor until your solo flight.

How long will it take to get all of my certificates and ratings?

Sunair utilizes the Jeppesen flight training program, which is designed to allow you to obtain your license in the minimum amount of time, while maintaining cost efficiency. Please remember that the flight hours required for flight training are an FAA required minimum. Reaching the FAA minimum does not guarantee that you are ready for the FAA check ride. Additional ground and flight training may be required for completion of the course. The US national average flight time for a private pilot certificate under FAA Part 61 is nearly 70 hours, but with hard work and dedication an applicant may qualify in less time.

When can I start?

You can start whenever you like! We recommend taking a discovery flight with one of our certified FAA Flight Instructors to see what flying is all about.

How do I schedule a flight?

Go to the "Book A Flight" tab on the navigation bar to access Flightschedulepro.com. Students and renters can choose what day, time, and instructor pilot they would prefer, according to availability. You may also schedule a flight by calling Sunair at 352-787-2211.

How do I cancel or reschedule a flight?

All students and renters are responsible for arriving on time.

All cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before your scheduled flight. If an emergency arises, please contact Sunair or your flight instructor.

Please do not cancel your flight based on early weather forecasts without first consulting your instructor.

If you wish to reschedule an instructional flight, please call your flight instructor or Sunair at least 24 hours before your appointment time and we will be happy to assist you.

Once I choose to fly at Sunair, what is my next step?

Once you have completed your discovery flight, you and your instructor will sit down and go over the course training syllabus, flight training supplies, and the FAA medical exam you will need to begin flight training.

After that, all you need is to fulfill your dream of becoming a pilot. And we’re here to guide you – at your pace and comfort level – every amazing moment of the way!

Can I do an entire Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) in the Redbird FMX AATD

According to the Instrument Rating PTS (Appendix 2), at least one Circling Approach must be made to a landing in the actual aircraft. The rest of the Instrument Proficiency Check can be accomplished in the Redbird FMX AATD, which is still very cost effective. Multi-million dollar simulators such as level C and D are approved to conduct the entire IPC.

Can I do a Flight Review in the Redbird FMX AATD

No, the Flight Review must be done in the aircraft. The FAA requires a minimum of 1 hour ground and 1 hour flight.

What documents do I need to bring to get started?

You must bring either a current US Passport or a valid US Birth Certificate and a Goverment Issued ID (Required by TSA 1552.3)

Do I need a FAA Medical Exam to get started?

No, a FAA Medical Certificate is not required to start, however it is required to solo. We recommend that you obtain an FAA Medical in the early stages of the training process, in case any issues should arise later on during the training. A minimum of a FAA 3rd Class Medical Certificate is required.

Can any doctor perform a FAA Medical Exam
